A Guide to Mastering Manual Focus

  1. Learn on the most basic, manual equipment you can find. The camera is a tool that you need to learn so well it becomes instinct. Make lots of mistakes. Make lots of images you’ll never use. Each and every one of them teaches you more than you might at first realize. After that there are no obstacles.

  2. I shoot manual, except for the focus. Ain’t nobody got time for manual focus on digital cameras. The old 35mm focus screens are far superior to the digital ones. If I had a focus screen like on my old Canons, I’d focus manually.

  3. Nothing new here. I was trained on Manuel equipment starting in the early 70’s and I still shoot pretty much everything that way. The camera is just a tool.
