Buildings And Institutions Will Not Shape Your Child’s True Potential

At What Cost Does Our Current System Of Education Come?

The developed world spends billions of dollars on education and is continuously moving the goal post on what is expected from our children. Absolutely, we should challenge our children’s potential. God created us with expandable capabilities, skills, and talents. So, we need to be all that we can be (As individuals, and not machines of course).

But, have we stopped to think “at what cost” does this investment come? We push our children to become more educated and competitive. Have we given other forms of critical development equal time? For example, the ability to think creatively and globally. What about socialization and coping skills or what about what we older folks use to call “common sense?” Finally, let us not forget possibly the weakest skill among our entire population. The ability to discern the truth from an opinion. Many schools have debate clubs which provide a competitive forum for students to learn to “win their perspective over.” Yet, where is the Truth Club?

Less Is More; Much More

I tool this photo of a schoolhouse in East Africa. Very typical of what you mind find in the rural part of the Continent. In this one building housed the all the children in the community or tribe. All ages shared a single room and a few sets of school supplies. The pencils were little more than a narrow piece of charcoal. Their writing books were crudely attached, curled pieces of paper. The children were all in uniforms (made possible through donations) which barely separated them by physical appearance. Consequently, there was no competition over who had the best outfit or the “hottest” sneakers (which would certainly upset Urban Outfitters and Nike). Yet, they were so intent on wanting to learn with so little to get in the way or distract them. A perfect setting to inspire a true learning experience.

Lesson Learned

We should take a lesson out of this book and realize that money doesn’t buy love and it doesn’t buy brilliance or intellectual superiority either. God embeds the gift of knowledge our DNA. And it is as much, if not more, the process of how we learn over what we learn. Knowledge alone, may get us a good job or make us plenty of money. However, the pursuit of knowledge and truth will make us what God intended us to be as individuals first, and as a race of man.

Are You Going To Get In The Way Of Yourself This Year?

I went to bed last night and set my alarm for 5:00 am.  What was I thinking? I was thinking I was going to get up and photograph the perfect circumstances God had planned and were forecasted for the morning sunrise over New York. Such anticipation for a great moment. Instead, I woke up closer to the sun’s transit overhead and overwhelmed by a sense of failure. Not because I missed the photo op; but because I questioned my own sense of appreciation particularly at the very start of a new year.

I am a photographer. Given a gift from God. The sunrise is also a gift from God. The two were destined to meet this morning but I got in the way. Call it procrastination. Call it fatigue. Call it plain lazy. But it is what it is. I got in the way of an opportunity to bring it all together. Most importantly for the glory of God and for others who may have enjoyed it as well through my gifts. I learned this morning that I need to move out of the way of myself, and follow the instincts and opportunities God puts in front of me – Faithfully.

How To Destroy Procrastination: Dear You Who Doesnt Want to Do that Hard Thing in the New Year (from A Holy Experience)

Dear Lovely You,

Who doesn’t want to do that hard thing in the New Year, who doesn’t want to get on the treadmill, or go for a run, or sort through the closets, or tackle the garage, or the piles of paperwork, or the project that’s hanging over you like a tonne of bricks, or do that big thing that feels like an impossible thing—

You’re made to do hard and holy things — because there’s no other way to get to the happy and holy things.” read more at aholyexperience.com

Put Your Shovels Away and Let It Snow!

I remember as a child cutting snowflakes out of folded paper and always entertained by the result. An acceptable rendition of what only God can produce perfectly. However, only when I stumbled on the work of a certain amateur photographer did I truly realize how magnificent a creation a simple snowflake is. Maybe not so simple after all. We can get up close and personal with the snowflake through the work of Alexey Kljatov. Get ready to be amazed!

Photographer Alexey Kljatov uses quick bursts of his shutter to animate snowflakes melting. The sequence above is in reverse.

Amateur photographer Alexey Kljatov uses a simple Canon PowerShot to capture these pristine photos of snowflakes. No, these designs aren’t the latest in 3D printing technology; they are photographs of snowflakes taken by self-taught Moscow photographer, Alexey Kljatov. Photo grapher Alexey Kljatov uses quick bursts of his shutter to animate snowflakes melting.

snowflake_sublimation_reversed“Every photographer with a simple point-and-shoot camera can make very good snowflake photos,” Kljatov said. “For this type of photography, patience, persistence and luck means much more than any expensive photo technique.” Kljatov has been photographing snowflakes for the past eight years.” read more at pbs.org

These photographs inspire me to put away my clunky equipment for a minute and capture God’s wonders more spontaneously.  The moments I see them or seek them. Spend more time with them. And get closer to the miracles of creation.

Kljatov describes his process on his website.

When God Smiles…

As a photographer, I have learned to observe the very subtle changes in a person’s expression in slow motion. Like the breaking of a smile that I can often induce with a joke or a facial expression of my own. And it is such an awesome spectacle to witness. I remember as a child wanting to sit in front of the oven with the light on and watch the cookies bake. I must say, there is something very special about watching a miracle in action.

Well, this is certainly the case twice daily with God’s sunrise and sunset. Neither happens instantaneously, but ever so slowly and still fast enough to capture the whole event – start to finish. And when we get to that moment where the sun blasts out over the horizon with its marvelous rays, it feels so much like that smile.

I Sense God Speaking Mystery…

Our circumstances are perfect in God’s eyes. Whether they are overwhelmed with trial and uncertainty, or filled with total bliss, they are a part of our plan. Hence, we should approach them with blind faith that God is with us, all the time.

“In God We Trust…”

The Founding Fathers of the United States knew this much. They didn’t imprint the currency of the new democracy with “In Government We Trust” or “In Gold We Trust.” They knew that the value and security of the republic’s entire economy could only be safe and preserved in the hands of God. Unfortunately, over this country’s relatively short history, the rich and powerful have managed to shift the trust in our economy into their own hands and we are living the consequences.

  • Disparity in opportunity
  • Wage inequities and imbalances
  • Lack of investment in education, training, and infrastructure
  • Access and costs relating to small business and personal financing
  • Taxation (without representation) at multiple levels
  • Neglect and deterioration of retirement systems and solutions
  • Inflated costs for basic needs
  • Lack of transparency and fairness in banking and Wall Street
  • Cost of war
  • Commingling of politics and finance (i.e., pay For play, lobbying, etc.)

Money should never have a relationship to power. Money is a proxy instrument for the purposes of barter. It was intended to be an efficient means of exchanging goods and services with one another. Not something that is gathered and coveted to gain control over a society. This is a weakness of man which is why it is in God we should trust and in nothing or no one else.

“I Do!”

Nothing says I do like “I Do!” Taken yesterday, this picture captured that exact moment and what a moment it was indeed. The photographer was standing behind a podium less than six feet from the action fumbling through some papers to look less than interested in what was going on. Just as the young lady’s soon-to-be-fiancé knelt, a concealed camera was pulled out and the moment was frozen in time. She was so caught up in the moment, she never really noticed the distraction. That’s the power of LOVE!

L1030039-Edit__© 2015 Gregory PaiGod is so good! When we find that special person, He places a love between a couple just like the love He has for us. Those of us that are married, need to remember that moment every day of our challenged days here on earth. It is a split second that we literally see God in each other. Jared and Krista are among the likely few who were able to create an unusual photographic archive of this very candid and revealing event.

Still – the rest of us can meditate on this photo and remember that specific time for ourselves.  Rest assure that God was with you that day, and is with you today in your marriage.  Bless you all…
